The type of "kouros" statue achieved its expressive peak during the 6th c. BC. Together with its female counterpart, "kore",they were symbolising the ideal of the contemporary Greek society. The Kouros of Samos was found near the ancient temple of Hera, the Heraion. It was a votive offered to Hera (the godess) by an Ionian noble called Isches. Acoording to the excavators, the huge statue (5.. m. height) was standing at the Nothern side of the "hiera hodos" (sacred way) which was the link between the ancient city of Samos and the Heraion. Today the visitor can "meet" this remarkable work of art while visiting the Archaeological Museum in the modern city of Samos
